The Old Grey Whistle Test (TOGWT)

The Old Grey Whistle Test (TOGWT)

Your brand of car care product or affiliation really doesn't matter; our commonalities are greater than our differences. My only agenda is to help raise an awareness of the chemicals contained in car care products and their correct use and application within the detailing industry. As well as sharing knowledge and experience to help the next generation of detailers

I am not sponsored by any company or individual nor do I have a vested interest [: a personal reason for involvement in an undertaking or situation, especially an expectation of financial or other gain]in any products.

I recommend products, I do not sell them, the recommendation is based upon extensive laboratory and ‘real world’ field testing. Choose carefully whose advice you listen to, and more importantly what advice you act upon. The misinformation and myths that are so prevalent in the detail industry is the reason that detailers need to do research on their own.

Do you know that 95% of the advice available to detailer’s or given on auto detailing forums comes from car care product vendors or their sponsored associates? This is especially worrying when you realise that very few have a background in Science or Chemistry. Some detailers are vendor sponsored along with some detailing forums that are pretending to be educators. In reality they are just advertisements, mere salesman. Those who have something to sell can be very persuasive, often using marketing facts (i.e. blurring the distinction between science and fiction) to make a great case while completely ignoring meaningful points, like their product adds nothing of real value.

We are one of a very few detailing pages that don’t try to sell you something; we only offer independent scientific and unbiased advice and How-To articles. Join the conversation!

I purchase all the products I use, so the endorsement is entirely personal and commercially unbiased, the product recommendation is based on "Does exactly what it says on the box" and it suits my detailing goals. The products mentioned have been personally subjected to extensive laboratory (using state of the art instruments and methodologies in some of the world's most prestigious labs) as well as field testing, and I have found that they will perform the task more than adequately, hence the personal recommendation, using the methodology and tools cited, which may or may not be the same as those recommended by the manufacturer. The price you’ll pay for product / methodology experimentation is knowledge and first-hand experience.

I would like to think that these articles become an asset to anyone who is new to detailing and to professionals alike, as well as industry experts who seek to advance their knowledge. No one can know it all, no matter how long they have been detailing; share experience and knowledge so that we learn from each other. Each one Teach one.

Choose carefully whose advice you listen to, and more importantly what advice you act upon. The misinformation and myths that are so prevalent in the detail industry is the reason that detailers need to do research on their own. Treat all marketing claims as being just biased marketing claims and if you're lucky they will be based on truth and the company will operate ethically.
You should never stop learning, and your quest for information should be part of your everyday process.
